A truly rare sword. 18th C. Imperial Russian swords are very rare to find especially dated. This example is a textbook example of the Model 1765 Artillery Sword of the second variant. The brass patina on the handle is beautiful aged and completely untampered with. The blade is also a well known style and is dated 1777 under the crown of Catherine the Great, and maker marked "SB" on the obverse side under her crown as well. The brass handle is stamped on both sides of the quillon with inspector markings.
A very fine addition to any collection, and dates from the period of the late 18th C. Russo-Turkish wars in which John Paul Jones, the famous American admiral took part.
See Kulinsky "Russian Edged Weapons" page 278.
Overall length is 33 1/2", blade is 27 1`/2".
