A fine and early example of a 19th C. circa 1845-1872 Maori war axe. These were the favored weapons of the feared Maori warriors during the attempted consolidation of the North and South Island by the British during the Maori Land Wars of. These examples were called Toki Kakauroa or turipou and were related other Maori war clubs and axes pouwkenua, tewhatewha, taiaha, and patiti. This example has a fine but aged axe head with the remains of the European or English trade maker name. The finely grained and patinaed haft is made of dark hardwood with some attractive carving at the top of the axe. There are several rattan bands near the base of the handle and in the middle of the haft.
A wonderful and original fighting implement.
