DAMASCUS Pre-WWI German Grosser Saxon Officer Sword

Sold

    Description

This is a truly massive example of the German sword makers art. The handle is beautiful made and fitted to a very large individual. This was likely the largest handle size one could purchase, and is obviosuly designed to custom order because the quality far surpasses any other I've handled. The crossguard has an applied silver lancers emblem, and the d-guard is fitted with a small silver Saxon wappen. The blade is proportional to the handle, the oversized style that is only seen on the largest swords. It is in truly superb condition with the wonderful damascus pattern visible throughout. The blade has been field sharpened at some point but does not detract from the effect of the blade. Underneath one of the crossguard langlets is also what appear to be the actual blade makers mark, not a sword makers mark, but a monogram of the damascus steel blade smith. Overall length us 42, blade is 34, width is 1 1/4 at ricasso.
