A fine example of a 17th C. Dutch silver hilted artillery officers rapier.  The hilt fittings are entirely chiseled in silver with various images including portraits of classical figures and 17th C. Dutch officers.  The uniforms and hairstyles generally reflect the mid to late 17th style.  In addition, sculptured dogs' heads appear at various points; from their mouths spring pas d'âne and knuckle guard, quillon); the arrangement and perspective of these figures is extraordinarily adapted to the narrow metal. A rare style of sword from the period of the 30 Years War.  This is a pappenheimer hilted tuck or estoc sword. The pappenheimer hilt was popular in the early 17th C. and is usually found with stiff rapier blade. However the blade on this example is a very thick armor piercing estoc blade, very rarely found.   The tuck normally would be carried hanging from the saddle, and was used as early as the 1320s as an additional side arm for the cavalry. A rare find and with exceptional provenance.  This is a 16th C. Polish pike with razor sharp side blades and a qudrangular shaped spearhead in iron. This exact piece is pictured in Stone's A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration, and Use of Arms and Armor in All Countries and in All Times: Together with Some Closely Related Subjects on page 500 ex. #4.  It is rare to find Polish items of that period and even more so those with impeccable provenance.
