Exceptional 19th C. Qing Dynasty Chinese Officers Saber with painted peony lacquered scabbard

( ID: cs896 )

A particularly fine example of a 19th C. Chinese Qing Dynasty officers sword. This example remains in absolutely superb condition and has the original matching belt hanger.  The handle is wrapped in the original orange silk wrapping and retains the original orange silk hanging cord, which fully matches the belt hanger straps as well.  The brass fittings are deeply chiseled and pierced brass with traditional motifs of dragons throughout.

The scabbard is a particularly rare example featuring a painted lacquered motif of peony flowers.  See Sothebys Asian Art Sale, December 2008 in Paris for a Chinese 19th C. shortsword with a scabbard of exact similar lacquered and painted peony flowers.

The blade is in perfect condition retaining the full original polish and inscribed with dragon images at the ricasso of finely incised design.

Overall length is 34,blade is 27".
