Exceptional Antique Imperial Russian Silver and Niello Kindjal Dagger, marked to Don region
|( ID: rd914 )|
An exceptional antique and heavy Imperial Russian silver kindjal dagger, marked to the Don region and likely made in Novocherkassk, dating to the period 1908-1913. Russian made silver kindjals are exceedingly rare and this example displays quality workmanship and an aesthetic design different and unique to Russian examples as opposed to the more common Caucasian examples. The quality of the silver, as evidenced by the thick borders and heavy weight is a sign of quality attributable to Russian examples over Caucasian examples. The region stamp is marked to the Don Region, showing a woman's head in profile with the greek letter "chi" which signifies the Don. The blade is stamped Osman and this example was likely made in his workshop and displays the level of quality that his best work is known for.
The condition is absolutely superb and it appears to be in the same condition as when it was produced with no loss of niello. The style and design of the niello work is very deep and shows off European as opposed to Caucasian motifs, particularly with a small empty silver escutcheon in the middle of the scabbard where an inscription or initials would have gone. The blade is razor sharp and very well made.
An example of this quality would have been affordable only to Russian nobility or a Cossack officer of some means.
Overall length is 19.75", blade is 13.5"
