Fine 17th C. Tanjore or Deccani South Indian Pata Gauntlet Sword
|( ID: is886 )|
A fine and early example of a South Indian Gauntlet sword. This example likely dates from the late 17th C.- early 18th C. judging by the thick sheet silver overlay and aging on the hilt. The gauntlet is a finely formed with no structural losses with a thick layer of silver sheet overlay some of which has losses but mainly which is darkened and needs to be polished and cleaned. The blade is a thick lenticular cross section shaped European trade blade of fine quality.
These types of swords were found throughout India but this decorative style of thick sheet silver overlay is more indicative of the southern region and the Deccani plateau.
A fine fighting example of an excellent sword.
Overall length is 51", blade is 39".
