Fine 19th C. Ottoman Turkish Shamshir with silver fittings and wootz blade
|( ID: is879 )|
A large and textbook example of an early 19th C. Ottoman Turkish shamshir. This example has alternately been referred to as originating in the Greek provinces and was likely carried by Greeks during the War of Independence of the early 19th C. but was also widely dispersed through the Ottoman Empire. This example is mounted in silver with finely chiseled circular and floral designs. The blade is made of watered steel of fine quality with several unpolished spots throughout that would clean up. A very elegant and large example of superb quality.
Overall length is 37", blade is 31".
