Gorgeous 18th C. German Crossbow with horn inlays
|( ID: es388 )|
A very finely made and well proportioned early to mid 18th C. German crossbow. This example appears to be in perfect working condition, and remains in very fine condition with nearly 95% of the original inlays intact. Nicely aged inlays, and also a mother of pearl plaque set with red wax inlays underneath the sliding site. The cord appears to be completely original to the piece and not a later replacement. A great example of these uncommon pieces, and a very finely decorative piece from the early Baroque era. See the last picture for an example of a very similar example in a lithograph in our private library from the Collection of Count Nesselrode, the Imperial Russian foreign minister, at his private estate in Tsarskoe Selo. Length is 25", width across bow strings is 21".
