Rare 17th C. Spanish or Italian Main Gauche Dagger with original scabbard

( ID: ed719 )

A beautiful example of a 17th C. main gauche left hand dagger. This is an original example and not a later Victorian reproduction. The main sail type guard is finely etched with 17th c. designs and with an inscription " AUSTYN S.CHZ GUARTAYRO DEL RAY" It appears that this example likely belonged to a guard of the king.

The thumb rest is beautiful chiseled and etched matching the decoration on the guard.  The blade is four sided and completely original type with two armorers marks on either side.

This example is particularly rare as it has the original scabbard mounted in brass and leather, with an old repair at the base of the chape fitting.

Overall length is 24", blade is 19".
