Rare 17th- early 18th C. German or Polish Axe with battle captured Ottoman Turkish 17th C. Axehead

Sold

    Description

An interesting historical oddity, this axe dates from late 17th C. through the early 18th C.Germany, likely Saxony judging by the staghorn inlay, or Poland judging by the syncretic design. The axehead itself is a very rare and early Ottoman Turkish head with a makers mark deeply impressed and brass inlaid designs on both sides of the head. The counter-punch is beautifully designed in an old form that European smiths often copied, particularly in Poland.

Overall length is 26 , axehead is 6 long and 6 wide
