Superb Late Rennaissance 17th C. Dutch or German Rapier Court Sword in the Grotesque manner

Dating to the mid to late 17th C. this example is one of the finest chiseled iron mounted court swords we've owned. Fully chiseled and carved in relief and pierced throughout, the crossguard, pommel and guard are all decorated en suite. The quality of the workmanship is superb and vividly shows a warrior on horseback and a reclining woman, likely an allegorical representation of Victory, in addition to other more grotesque representations in the aesthetic tradition of 17th C. Grotesquerie.
