Very Important 18th C. Korean Choson Joseon Dynasty Prince's or General Helmet of hardened lacquered leather with gilt brass mounts

Sold

    Description

One of the rarest examples of Korean arms and armor that can be acquired.

This Korean prince's helmet is of a type found in numerous museum collections around the world, and seldom found in private collections. The quality of the workmanship is outstanding and rivals the finest Chinese work in the chiseled gilt brass designs on the outside of the helmet, with Buddhist designs of swastikas and traditional Korean animal motifs such as the phoenix bird and the dragons.

Examples of this type have been attributed to the 16th C. through the 19th C. but judging by the quality of the workmanship and design we date this example to the 18th C.
