Very rare 15th-16th C. German Italian Polish Gothic War Hammer or Czekan

Sold

    Description

A very interesting and early war hammer of interesting design. Judging by the quality of the work, the hand forging visible on the hammer head, and the interesting early Germanic decoration, we judge this to be an early war hammer to the Gothic period, possibly as early as the 15th C., but more likely an armory example of the early 16th-mid 16th century. There is also a possibility that it is an early Polish war hammer as well, a czekan, which were known in this form as well.

The head is formed of a hammerhead on one side and a long spike on the other, with the weight interestingly skewed toward the spike, for piercing plate armor.

Overall length is 20, hammerhead is 8.5 in length.
