# Ancus, Ankus, Fursi, Gusbar, Hen\-Doo

The Indian elephant goad, shaped much like a modern boathook, with a spike on the end and a sharp hook on the side. Handles used by riders are comparatively short and hooks vary in size; those carried by a person walking beside the elephant are about five feet long and have small hooks. Some are plain and functional; others are decorative, finely chiseled, or fitted with ivory, jade, goldwork, and jewels. Lengths range from about 15 inches to nearly four feet. (Figs. 14–15).
