Iron, gold, leather, wood. Overall length 13". Left-hand / parrying dagger blade later remounted as a plug bayonet with gilt brass fittings.
\r\n
The blade is elaborately pierced with decorative motifs and retains gilt decoration on the guard and pommel elements, including etching with gold over the etching. The hilt conversion is a classic early plug-bayonet form in gilt brass. Left-hand daggers (parrying daggers) accompanied the rapier in late-16th- and early-17th-century European fencing schools; by the later 17th century many blades of this class were remounted as plug bayonets for musket use.
\r\n
References.
\r\n
\r\n
Object measurements and culture/period fields as recorded in the Arms & Antiques catalogue entry (Period: 17th century; Culture: Germany; Materials: iron, gold, leather, wood; overall length 13 in.).
\r\n
Catalogue comparable to be added when a public museum or sale example with verified inventory/lot number is confirmed — do not invent citations.
\r\n
","date_added":"2024-12-06T09:28:02","is_imported":false,"publish_at":null}
