18th C. British Welsh Regimental Short Sword

Status: Sold · Region: Europe · Type: Swords

A very interesting and early style of the Welsh short sword. This example has English 18th C. characteristics from the brass guard to the fishskin covered grip, but it is distinctly similar to the Cleddyf Cymraeg, the archaic Welsh national sword, which is almost exactly similar to this very interesting sword. The WWI Royal Welsh Fusiliers Cleddyf is almsot exactly the same with a similar heavy leaf shaped blade, see the accompanying picture, the only difference is that the medial ridge on the WWI Cleddyf is more pronounced and the disc guard on the WWI Cleddyf is folding. Other than that this short sword is a very serious fighting piece with a very heavy blade and well proportioned and elegant handle and crossguard. See the accompanying French cabbage chopper short sword for comparison. OAL length is 29, blade is 22 and 2 1/4 wide.
