A very fine quality 18th C. Persian tabar axe, with a gorgeous wootz blade with chiselled forte and gold wash and gold koftgari. This example has a very finely formed counterbalance in the form of a cow or a devil head, with a small bird shaped top. In the handle is a very finely formed spike that runs almost the entire length of the handle, and screws into it very tight with barely any space to be seen. Length is 24 1/2, cutting edge is 6 1/2.
