# Black Sea Yataghan

Price: $2,799.00 · Region: Middle East, Ottoman Turkey, Persia · Type: Swords

**At a glance.** Laz People — Turkey and Georgia, 19th century. Iron, horn, leather, wood. Overall length 28". Black Sea yataghan (Laz bichaq) with multi-fullered blade, original scabbard, and rain cover on the ricasso.

This example is in clean original condition: it retains its original scabbard and the original rain cover on the blade ricasso. The blade is multi-fullered with limited decoration, consistent with provincial Black Sea work. Laz bichaqs follow the forward-curving yataghan blade tradition but usually have a more restrained hilt than the large ear-pommel Ottoman court yataghan; handles are commonly horn, bone, or wood.

The type sits at the meeting of Ottoman yataghan design, Caucasian decorative habits, and Laz maritime/warrior culture along the eastern Black Sea coast.
