FINEST 19th C. Greek Silver Niello Palaska Cartidge Box

Status: Sold · Region: Europe

Probably the nicest and most symbolic Greek cartridge box, palaska, I've seen. This example is in nearly perfect condition, with the original niello in very nice condition. The symbolic imagery on the face is perfectly indicative of the relationship between Greece and Turkey for the past several hundred years. Athena stands in her finery with a stand of arms to her left and the owl of Athena on her right hand shoulder. In her right hand she holds a freshly decapitated Turk's head. Gruesome imagery but very cool nonetheless.
