Russian Caucasian Georgian Shamshir Shashka sword

Status: Sold · Region: Europe · Type: Swords

Caucasian shashkas are often found with imported European, oftentimes German or Hungarian trade blades, and more rarely such as on this example with wootz shamshir blades.

This Caucasian shamshir is mounted in classic shashka mounts but which were clearly made en suite for this blade. The mounts of classic silver inlaid with niello and consisting of the less common style of mounting where the handle sits flush with the scabbard, and does not slide into the scabbard as is more common. This style is known throughout the Caucasus but indicates a more Europeanized influence. Stylistically the decoration and style of the handle and scabbard mountings indicate either Georgia or Dagestan as the more specific geographic origin, and dating to the 2nd to 3rd quarter of the 19th century.

The overall condition is fine with some scuffing on the leather, the niello is generally fine condition with minimal losses throughout, and with a few spots of pitting on the blade, which otherwise displays a fine watered steel wootz pattern throughout.
