A very nice and scarce early 19th C. French naval dirk or short sword. It has the proper proportions of a Mamluke style short sword but has the dimensions of an oversize naval dirk. It is undoubtedtly naval by the style of decoration and the size.
The ebony wood handle is in fine condition with the original steel guard chain. The blade has faint etching of oriental symbols, popular on European weapons in the early 19th C.
A very pretty naval dirk.
