Saber of the period 1785-1800 with steel blade engraved with the words "American Light Horse" a Federal style eagle with 6 pointed stars and shield on both sides. The hilt is brass openwork and the lion's head pommel is well defined with punch decoration to define whiskers. Stamped into the brass hilt are letters which are difficult to read but appear to be LSHU at the fore end where the grip meets the hilt. Part scabbard with brass mount remains. The top of the blade is engraved with the maker's name Wm. Tesche Peters Sohn, in Solingen, fecit. America, 1785-1800. Virtually identical in every respect to Plate 18 in Harold L. Peterson
